Major passages: (1) Isa. 42:1-7 (2) Isa. 49:1-9. Servant theme  becomes much more prominent at this point. Humiliation of the servant. (3) Isa. 50:1-11. Explanation of how the Servant is to accomplish these things.  Takes a surprising turn. First mention of suffering. Suffering servant and the Justification that the suffering will accomplish. Nation or individual: Answer in Isa. 50:5 - the servant voluntarily gave himself up to suffering. Contradicts picture of Israel in previous chapters (Israel deaf, blind and rebellious).

A comparison between the humiliation of Israel and that of the servant. Proof of Israel's inability to carry out its task.

Last hour Dan. 8:23-24 Antiochus Epiphanees. 2. Basic Approaches to the book of Daniel. a. Critical approach - reflects on reliability and historicity of the book, b. *1 vannoylib.ibri.org MP3 Vannoy, J. Robert Old Testament Prophets II #22
II Daniel A. 1-2 C67-72 START OF DANIEL

START OF DANIEL  A. Introductory Remarks 1. Date and Authorship. a. Critical Views - late date around 165 BC, period of Maccabees. (1). Assumption that Predictive Prophecy does not happen. (2) Historical Errors Alleged by Critical Scholars - Existence of mythical kingdom between Median and Persian (response: wrong identification of the vision images); reference to Belshazzar as king instead of Nabonidas (response: co-regent - Nabonidas absent at the time - see new ISBE encyclopedia); reference to Nebuchadnezzar as father of Belshazzar (response: Semitic usage of the term = "ancestor"); No person as Darius the Mede existed (response: lack of evidence; reasonable suggestions: another name for Cyrus?; ). (3) Alleged late linguistic features. Centers on use of Greek loan words for musical instruments (Dan. 3:5), and use of "late type" aramaic in the aramaic passages. But evidence of greek contact long before Alexander; quote Baldwin on aramaic KA Kitchen the Aramaic of Daniel. Imperial Aramaic (undatable); only three greek words and all for musical instruments. Nothing surprising about Greek names of instruments. What is surprising is so few Greek words if the setting of Daniel is late. 2. General remarks on the content of the book. 2 Sections: a. Dan. 1-6 Historical; Not connected presentation of history. Theme is that God is supreme. b. Dan. 7-12 Prophetical section. 4 visions Ch. 7,Ch. 8,Ch. 9, Ch. 10-12. Also Ch. 2.
